Getting to Malaga & Gibraltar by Air

Malaga is served by one of the busiest International airports in Spain, and as such, there are flights and connections to many major cities world wide.  Gibraltar, although a lot smaller than Malaga, has quite a few scheduled and charter flights that make it worthwhile investigating, especially from UK airports.

From the UK & Ireland:
Easyjet, one of many scheduled carriers which has daily flights to MalagaThere are several daily scheduled and charter flights year round from most regional airports in the UK.  Both the major carriers, such as British Airways and Iberia, and the "budget" airlines such as Easyjet and Ryanair, fly into Malaga airport, as well as a host of charter companies, with some offering flight booking direct from their web site (such as Air 2000).  And remember, booking early for all flights can lead to major savings on normal fares.  Also, each of the airlines has special offers that run either on the website or in the daily press.  These offers can bring substantial savings on the prices listed below.

From the Rest of Europe:
Since Malaga is Spain's third busiest airport (and in the summer, one of the busiest in Europe), most of the major European carriers have regular scheduled direct flights, as well as via the hubs of Madrid or Barcelona.  Iberia in particular, as the Spanish national carrier, has a plethora of flights to Malaga from around Europe.   Other major carriers with direct flights are Swiss, SAS, Alitalia, Air France and Lufthansa.

About Malaga Airport:
Malaga Airport is the 4th busiest airport in Spain, and lies about 8 kilometres to the south-west of the city.  It has all the services you would expect from a major international airport, and is well connected with the city and surrounding resorts.  There are 3 terminals: Terminal 2 handles ALL departures, and also handles the arrivals for flights coming from the Schengen countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden) plus UK and Irish flights. Terminal 1 handles all other arriving international flights.  Terminal 3 is for private and light aircraft.

Airport Services:
Malaga airport has all the essentials that a travel-weary passenger will need: Cafeterias, a Burger King and a full-service restaurant and bars (including an Irish pub!), all the major car rental firms, a bank, bureaux de change, cash machines, and information desks.  If you need more information on facilities at the airport, the Malaga Airport information number is +34 952 048 842 or 844.

PLEASE NOTE - MALAGA AIRPORT DOES NOT HAVE BAGGAGE STORAGE NOR LOCKERS!  The closest place to leave your bags for a day is at the Malaga Bus Station in the city.

Getting In and Out:
By car, the airport is situated just off the N340 (also signposted as the E-15) which is the main dual-carriageway that runs all along the south-coast.  The airport is well signposted.  There is plenty of parking available and there is a long-term car-park outside Terminal 1, which costs approx. €4.50 per day for stays over 4 days.
There is also a train-link to downtown Malaga, which runs between 6am and midnight every half-hour and costs about €1.  The train station is accessed by an elevated walkway from just outside Terminal 2 departures.  From Malaga you can link up with both the train to Madrid and the other coastal and inland routes.  Since the airport is on the the Malaga - Fuengirola local line, you can also get to other local resorts such as Torremolinos and Fuengirola very quickly.  See the Spanish state railways website (www.renfe.es) for more details.
There are also 2 bus handy bus services from the airport, one to Malaga (which leaves every half an hour from T1 and T2) and one direct to Marbella.
And there are always loads of taxis outside the arrival halls, and they are not too expensive - certainly in comparison to Northern European and US cities.  Example fares are: Central Malaga - €15, Fuengirola - €20, Marbella - €45, Puerto Banús - €50, Estepona - €70.  There is a compulsory  €4.50 charge for an airport pickup/drop-off that will be added to the meter at the end.
