"SOFT ADVENTURE BLENDED WITH A COLORFUL PACKAGE OF CULTURE, FOOD & CELEBRATION = NON-STOP FUN!"

TOUR DESCRIPTION:
Join us for this light activity week in the shadow of Andalucia's strongest cultural influence - The Moors. For over 700 years (until Columbus sailed to America), the Moors ruled Andalucia and consequently left an everlasting imprint on the land, people and culture. To witness this influence first hand is a delight and Adventurebug offers this unique active break to bring out the best of the region - in a fun & active way!

This 8 day tour of light Walking, Trail Biking, River Spelunking,  Cave visits and more takes you into the heart of Moorish Andalucia. We retrace the steps of the Moorish culture and stay in their villages that remain virtually untouched. The highlight is a short trip across the sea to the exotic land of Morocco for a day of exploration and sensational experiences.

The Moorish Explorer is a multi-activity holiday for all abilities and backgrounds.  It's designed to tour one through our beautiful region using light activity as its medium.  As for the pace - our walks, rides and other activities are easy with the focus on fun rather than overexertion!  Our experience in active holidays tells us that most people seek a balance between light, interesting activity with new cultural experiences such as language, food, wine and colorful people and lifestyle - this is the true essence of the Moorish Explorer!

So if you, your family or group are seeking an opportunity to try new active experiences without overexerting oneself AND witness the dynamic culture and unspoiled beauty of true Andalucia, this is your tour!

GENERAL DETAILS:
This 7 night / 8 day Adventure Holiday takes you through Andalucia's most fascinating landscapes and into the heart of Arabic/Flamenco España! Trekking, light Mt. biking and a mix of easy rock climbing, cave visits and more are your medium for experiencing this awe-inspiring land. To top it off, you spend a day on the shores of Africa on a guided visit to Morocco.

All activities, hotels, meals and destinations were hand-chosen based on our years of experience in the region. Adventurebug takes their guests to places that are unreachable to the average tourist - seeking authentic experiences only!

FAMILIES AND GROUPS:

The Moorish Explorer (like our Family Adventure Week), is one of those rare tours where you can try a wide range of outdoor pursuits while enjoying a well rounded program of culture and travel.  We welcome families and small groups on this itinerary (age is limited to 11 years old).

DURATION OF TOUR / STARTING DAY:
8 days, 7 nights - starting on Sundays

NOT INTERESTED IN THE PHYSICAL SIDE?
Sometimes friends and partners wish to be a part of our tours but would rather do their own thing such as enjoy their book in a plaza, shop local markets or just take in the atmosphere on their own terms - joining the group of course for evening fun!  We are happy to accommodate 'non active' partners - please enquire directly about price and availability.

"7 Days is too short!  What a fantastic introduction to hiking, abseiling, rock climbing and swimming in the wild - I'm hooked and will be back again!  Thanks Matt and Julie for a fantastic week."  Paula Edminston (England, UK), Moorish Explorer Multi Adventure Week - May 2002

ITINERARY (2004 & 2007 Season)

DAY 1: (Sunday)
Malaga Airport collection and transfer to our base in the charming Moorish village of Casares. From your hotel witness fine views of the sea and Africa and relax at the nearby bar terraces beneath the castle - contemplating your adventure ahead. Tonight after a short walking tour of Casares, a special dinner at the home of a unique Spanish lady welcomes us to our holiday!

DAY 2: (Monday)
This morning we trek the local hills and crags around the village area down to the healing waters of the rustic 2000 year old Roman Baths - a journey past ruined water mills, old farms and a chance to become acquainted with the many wild flowers, herbs and fruits of the region. An exciting yet easy abseil down into a gorge gives us a better view of nature! After a cool dip and tapas picnic lunch we shuttle back to Casares for some quiet relaxation time before sampling some village 'tapas' that evening.
Level: Easy walk / Easy abseil

DAY 3: (Tuesday)
Today we collect our Mt. Bikes for a pretty descent to the Rio Genal where an easy track takes us to a lovely river spot. Here we picnic on the shaded banks and have a refreshing swim next to an orange grove (with nobody in site!). A shuttle up the mountain takes us to our base at Benarabba - a charming mountain hamlet surrounded by cork and cherry forests.
Level: Easy riding on good road and track

DAY 4: (Wednesday)

Today we transfer to the Grazalema National Park region of Cortes (known as one of the fiercest bullfighting towns of the past). Here we walk up a mountain pass on ancient Phoenician cobbles leading to some very remote mountain valleys. After a picnic with beautiful views we transfer to mystical karst landscapes and the Cave de la Pileta - where a guided tour by lamplight deep into the cave offers us 27 000 year old rock art. Tonight we reside in the ancient White Village of Montejaque - set in a near lunar landscape!
Level: Moderate walk (3 hours) and Easy cave walk (1 hour) non-technical

DAY 5: (Thursday)
A good day to have a little stretch in the morning followed by a relaxing (okay lazy), afternoon in Ronda - one of the region's most striking towns. We begin with a short and highly scenic walk to a remote chapel once thought to heal pilgrims from the plague - the setting is spectacular!.  Soon after we arrive for a restful afternoon in Ronda (partly made famous by bullfighting and Hemingway), offering us a chance to shop for souvenirs, relax in sunny open plazas and visit some fine monuments.  Tonight make the most of your stay in Ronda by taking in Rocio's Flamenco Academy performance (optional) or dine in one of the many tapas bars near the wonderful gorge.
Level: Easy walk

DAY 6: (Friday)
This morning we depart Ronda to arrive at a pretty cave site and river where we'll get the ropes out and have a go on a variety of beginner climbing and abseil routes right next to the cave!  If you ever thought of trying rock climbing - this is your chance and we make it easy and safe!  After we can swim in the waterfalls of the cave before shuttling towards the coast in preparation of our adventure to Morocco.  Along the way we stay in the pretty village of Jimena de la Frontera where an optional walk along a pretty river up to the castle looming over the village is offered.  Tonight we stay in the very Moorish Hostal Anon - a traditional Moroccan style home that has many levels and assorted rooms and lush patios.  With a pool on the roof and a great terraced bar overlooking the village this is hard place to leave!
Level: Intro level rock climbing fun! / Easy walk option

DAY 7: (Saturday)
Our day to cross the Straits of Gibraltar to the Kingdom of Morocco! After a short 40 minute crossing on modern hydrofoil ferry, Your Moroccan guide escorts you to the busy Medinas (old town) with their Souks (markets) and Kashbahs of Tetuan and Tanger.  A lunch in a traditional style restaurant with unique decor and entertainment follows before a scenic drive along the Moroccan coast line before returning at the end of the day.  Note - we will be part of another tour for this excursion. Travel is by private bus and ferry.  Upon returning from Morocco, we stay in Algeciras right in the charming city center at a modern 3* hotel.
Level: Easy walking and sight seeing today only

DAY 8: (Sunday)
After final breakfast we return you to Malaga Airport and say farewell to your group and trip leader.
