"New for 2009! A different approach to discovering Andalucia. This week’s exploration of its finest cities is themed around a cultural activity (choose from Ceramics, Flamenco and Food & Wine) and will give you the chance to discover new skills under the guidance of a local expert."

Instead of just visiting Andalucia, why not experience it, too? As well as possessing a wealth of stunning monuments, Granada, Cordoba and Seville also boast a thriving cultural and artistic life. You’ll gain a unique insight into this world from our local, English-speaking expert, through two days of tuition and activities in one of Ceramics, Flamenco or Food & Wine. The classes will be in small groups, with dynamic, highly personable tutors, and each Week will introduce you to elements of the other Activities, ensuring your experience is broad and diverse. No prior experience in the Activity chosen is required as our tutors will happily accommodate all levels.

Flamenco Week

Learn about the most passionate dance in the world - in the place it was invented!!

The Flamenco Cultural Week will bring you up close to the passionate world of flamenco, possibly modern Andalucia’s greatest cultural gift to the wider world. Flamenco has strong roots in the gypsy communities of Seville, Cadiz, Jerez and Granada, but its precise origins are far from clear and at times legend and fact seem to exist as one. Granada has contributed many past and present greats of flamenco, many from the Sacromonte district. This semi-rural idyll of cave houses, winding streets and fabulous views of the Alhambra is the best place to uncover the soul of flamenco and we will visit both during the day – on a Guided Walk featuring a museum dedicated to gypsy life – and at night, to see a live performance at one of the many atmospheric venues in this area.

Food & Wine Week

The Food & Wine Cultural Week introduces you to the cuisine of Andalucia via its essential elements: liberal amounts of sunshine, the Mediterranean sea, a rich variety of landscapes, and the lust for life of its people.

All are ingredients in a culture of food and wine that is one of Europe’s most ancient and exalted, hugely enriched by Greek, Roman and Arab influences and by the culinary discoveries brought from the New World. What’s more, it is a culture that is very much a part of day-to-day life. From a sleepy village at the end of a valley famed for its citrus fruits to the hubbub of sophisticated Seville, this Cultural Week will show you how central food and wine are to life throughout Spain’s deep south. As well as the obvious and very enticing prospect of seven days of eating and drinking, we will learn about many more aspects of the region’s gastronomic culture with a trip to market, a walk to gather fresh herbs from the hillsides, visits to a wine bodega and an olive oil mill, tastings in delicatessens of some of the region’s finest products, and an exploration of the tapas culture so central to the Spanish way of life.

Ceramics Week

The Ceramics Cultural Week introduces you to the well-renowned Granada school of pottery, a style with its roots in the city’s Islamic past.

Indeed, we will be taken around a pottery works which dates back almost 500 years to just after the Christian re-conquest, and visit a ceramicist who creates replicas of the ornamental pottery of the Moorish rulers. Hands-on tuition will be given in the workshop of a local artist, where you will be shown the techniques for hand painting ceramic tiles in a variety of designs. The tiles will be yours to take home, and should you wish to purchase more of the Granada pottery our Tour Leader will be on hand to guide you around the best shops. As with all Cultural Weeks, we also get a flavour of the other Activities, with a live Flamenco show and – of course! – the wonderful food and wines of Andalucia.
